The Day We Didn’t Go to Dole
Another travelling day as we moved on from Vienne and headed towards Alsace and a village near Colmar. Our long drive was taking us on the highway past Dole, which we had visited on a cold, sleeting day in January 2014 with our kids. We decided to stop off there for lunch and perhaps take updated photos in some places, a bit of a laugh and trip down memory lane.
By the time we got near Dole the temperature was around 9 degrees and it was pouring down. The trip had been slower than planned as the speed limit reduces from 130km per hour to 110 in the rain. Consequently we agreed we did not feel like getting drenched and cold, so if anyone reading this blog wants to see photos of Dole in the Jura they will have to read our old blog instead http://www.travelark.org/travel-blog-entry/hayesj/1/1388781794
We arrived at our cottage in Wintzenheim late and after a stroll through the village found there was nowhere open for dinner on a Wednesday night. We headed for Colmar and stopped pretty much at the first restaurant that appeared open and where we could get a park relatively close (not in the centre of Colmar, that delight was left for the next day). Our French is pretty non existent but we did look at the displayed menu and it looked like you could get grilled beef and some lamb and chicken dishes. This was true, what was a surprise was that it was a Turkish restaurant. It was great, even though unexpected. We do like turkish food. An amusing moment when we asked for the wine list - she said "red or white". We said we wanted a bottle of red and did they have a wine list/menu. She said "I am the wine list, you can have turkish red or pinot noir". We decided to be devils and try the turkish. Great night out.
