Market day - a trip round the countryside
We decided it was time for a more relaxed day after our long day in Bordeaux and time to do something different. Late morning saw us at a country village market in Creon. It might have been a small place but the market was extensive with multiple stalls selling anything from cheese to fish to meat to veges and fruit to clothing, jewelery, live hens etc etc etc. We still had cheese left so did not indulge much but did buy fresh bread and strawberries as we planned another evening nibbling nice food and drinking wine at our tower. The market was bustling full of locals and all the stalls were doing great trade despite there being a lot of competition with at least five cheese stalls, a similar number of meat stalls (Stephen was interested to note poultry comes with head attached) and even more fruit and vege stalls. Congratulations to Stephen for successfully navigating the very tight parking situation.
A lovely drive through small villages and a brief stop to explore a cemetery beside a church with interesting double belles which seems a style favoured in the area before arriving in the small village of Rauzan where there is an old castle built by King John (Jean to the French) who of course lost the French possessions and was of Magna Carta fame. The castle is falling down now but we climbed some scarily steep circular staircases to the top of very high towers for some spectacular views.
Being called down from a high tower as the castle was closing for lunch we strolled into the small square and found a tiny pizzeria at which to lunch. Fabulous pizza each named after a rock band or star in english but descriptions in French. My Pink Floyd pizza had two types of salmon (fresh and smoked) and Stephen ordered the Police - chicken and pineapple. Both were good but the Pink Floyd was fab. There was only one type of wine available by the glass and to my disappointment it was rose. But I swallowed my reluctance and ordered one and actually enjoyed it. Would say it was not your typical rose.
We wended our way home and had an afternoon stroll down through the vineyard to the water fields and lakes before ending our day with wine and cheese in the sun.
